The miniature portrait has none of these grave dangers to avoid. It has no fear of startling us by too close a similitude to the living, or appearing as the galvanised resuscitation of the mighty dead.

The miniature, then, is an attempt to reproduce the uni verse in graspable form. It represents a desire to possess the world more completely, to banish the unknown and the unseen.
