NHL insider Darren Dreger recently said that the Toronto Maple Leafs are in line to make a big trade before the deadline to boost their playoff chances.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are closing in on a three-year extension with John Tavares, according to NHL insider David Pagnota.

That changed on Saturday as The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta reported that Tavares and the Maple Leafs have agreed to a contract extension for the Mississauga native to stay put in Toronto. While not yet officially announced pending "some finetuning," the deal is believed to be for three years at an average annual value of around $7 million.

NHL insider Chris Johnston appeared on TSN's "OverDrive" on Monday and confirmed earlier reports saying that Toronto could consider moving top prospects Easton Cowan or Fraser Minten. Those two, however, would only depart in a deal for a significant player in return.
