Waivers have already been approved in a dozen states ban unhealthy foods from being bought using SNAP benefits.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins recently signed waivers to change the definition of food that’s allowed to be purchased under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, the official name of food stamps, in Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia. The changes go into effect in 2026.

Recent changes in the SNAP program have led to new restrictions in six states, affecting millions of beneficiaries. These changes aim to promote healthier eating habits by limiting the purchase of certain processed foods and beverages.
