The Papal conclave has sent up white smoke from the Sistine Chapel, signaling a new pope has been chosen at the Vatican today. The white smoke was seen at approximately 12:08 p.m. ET and the announcement will follow shortly after the new pontiff is prepared.
The pop star was photographed on May 8 in attendance at the conclave election of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, which is a photo that has now gone viral.
The announcement “Habemus Papam” — “We have a pope” — from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica is followed first by the revelation of the new pontiff’s baptismal name, in Latin, followed by his papal name, wrought with meaning.
Papal conclave ballots have been burned to maintain secrecy for centuries. Ballot smoke has been used to announce a decision since 1914.
White smoke poured from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and the great bells of St. Peter's Basilica tolled Thursday after cardinals elected the 267th pope to lead the Catholic Church on the second day of their conclave.
Over an hour after the white smoke emerged, the new pope, clad in his papal vestments, stepped out onto the balcony and greeted the world.
Hours after the Pope Leo XIV announcement, Catholics in the Seattle area said they were processing the news and hoped Leo could be a bridge builder.
